New Century Trust Awards First Grant, Announces Grant Guidelines
This is the first grant awarded by the New Century Trust (NCT) through
a new unrestricted grantmaking program announced in May.
“This marks a significant turning point for the organization, as we
enter our second century of community service,” said NCT Board President
Cynthia Little. “Historically, we have provided programming and direct services,
but over the years these activities have diminished. Now, the board has
undertaken a new direction, to utilize our endowment to help other nonprofits
which are making important contributions to improving the lives of women and
girls.”
Founded in 1893, the New Century Trust and its membership arm, the New
Century Guild, comprised one of the earliest, largest and most successful of
many organizations created in the 19th century to assist the
increasing numbers of women who were entering the work force. Activities included publication of a newspaper for
working women; a research section that collected statistics on working women;
evening classes for pleasure and professional development; a large library with
full-time librarian; a restaurant that offered noonday meals to working women
at a modest price; an assembly hall; guest rooms for members; and a health
insurance plan.
